Google Pixels are excellent Android phones for most people. Seven years of updates, “Pure” Android, good cameras and enough hardware for everyday life. This last point is perhaps the most problematic: the hardware is just adequate.

For a while, the production of Google Tensor was in the hands of Samsung. Neither Exynos nor Tensors have anything to do compared to TSMC, there is a significant performance gap compared to competitors from Qualcomm and MediaTek (needless to say, they are also behind Apple and Bionic chips). This is about to change: The next generation Pixel aims to come out of TSMC’s hands.

According to Android Authority, the Google Tensor G5 will be produced by TSMC, not Samsung. American media claims to have reached a document revealing that the G5 will be the work of the Taiwanese giant, leaving aside the cooperation with Samsung.

If what was promised in the document to which the authority claimed to have access was fulfilled, we would be faced with the most significant leap in Google history in terms of Pixel production.

Although tensors have improved over time, they have always been about two generations behind TSMC according to synthetic tests. In fact, the Tensor G3 that we were able to test on the Google Pixel 8 performs equally well as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

What matters here is whether Google wants to collaborate with TSMC to produce a higher-end chip or will put a more mid-to-high range chip on the table for cost savings. The results will depend on the purpose of these plans. We will have to wait for the Google Pixel 9 to finally find out whether the processor is produced by TSMC.
