According to IDC, China’s foldable smartphone market will grow significantly in the second quarter of 2024. The market grew by 104% compared to last year, led by Huawei.
Huawei took first place with a 41.7% market share thanks to the popularity of the Mate X5 and Pocket 2 models. While last year’s Mate X5 continues to be in high demand, the recently launched Pocket 2 has also attracted great interest. These two models appeal to different segments, helping Huawei to hold the top spot.
Vivo comes in second with a 23.1% market share. The X Fold 3 and X Fold 3 Pro, equipped with advanced hinge technology, lightweight design, and impressive cameras, helped Vivo. Vivo’s strategy of offering a more affordable ‘vanilla’ model in its foldable series also contributed to its success.
After that, Honor holds 20.9% of the market. Later in the quarter, the company launched its new foldable phones Magic V Flip, Magic Vs3, and Magic V3, so these figures are not included in the IDC report. However, these new models will boost Honor’s performance in the second half of the year.
Xiaomi is trying to catch up. The recently launched Mix Fold 4 and Mix Flip were not included in Q2 figures but could increase Xiaomi’s market share in the coming months. Oppo, which did not launch any major new products, maintained its 8.4% share, mainly due to stock clearance. Meanwhile, Samsung only captured 1.4% of the market.
The foldable smartphone market in China is developing rapidly. While Huawei is currently the leader, the increasing number of competitors and the launch of new products indicate that interest in this area is increasing. Future growth will depend on how well manufacturers can solve issues such as pricing, durability and user experience.
