The answer to the question of why Samsung did not use the thin hinge mechanism in the Galaxy Z Fold4, as in the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, was given by the founder of research companies Display Supply Chain Consultants and DisplaySearch Ross Yang.
Ross Young reports that Samsung is testing several modern hinge solutions, including thinner variants than the one used in the Galaxy Z Fold4. The reason why the company isn’t using a small hinge like the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is simple: it doesn’t meet the IPX8 protection rating.
Samsung claims that the Galaxy Z Fold4 is waterproof to the level of IPX8. The South Korean company believes that all phones worth more than $1,000 should be waterproof, so the company didn’t use a miniature hinge. Samsung did not use a waterdrop hinge on the Galaxy Z Fold4.
Xiaomi does not claim any degree of water resistance for the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2. It was also revealed that the replacement of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 screen will cost $ 725. When folded, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is 15.8mm thick, while the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is just 11.4mm thick.
