Lockheed Martin begins installing combat lasers on US warships

The HELIOS shock laser system has more than 60 kilowatts of power. So far, it has only been deployed on one of the ships as a test setup, but is already capable of participating in ship operations.

What is known about HELIOS

  • As the source states, the installation can change its power depending on the current situation.
  • Combat laser, for example, is designed to hit drones flying aboard and can hit several targets at once.
  • The company claims each shot costs no more than $1 (of course, without taking into account the price of the equipment itself). The advantage of laser guns is that they don’t require expensive bullets that can run out. In this case, the system can fire an unlimited number of shots as long as it is powered.

The HELIOS system blinds the optical sensors of enemy combat vehicles. At the same time, the same generated beam collects information about targets, making the system an important link in multi-level protection.

Currently, the company does not say whether such installations will operate on land or in air transport and will be installed on the ground, for example, to protect military bases or other important objects that could be threatened by drone attacks.
