The company had already shown the design of these terminals, but now it has revealed a new detail: Pixel 7 will be managed by Tensor G2, the company’s new SoC. It will probably be a little more powerful and efficient, but above all it will be good at one thing: artificial intelligence.

Focus is on photos and voice recognition

When a new mobile SoC was released, what used to be important was how powerful it was. Then it imported more and more of its efficiency, but now Google has another point of view: What matters is how well you run artificial intelligence processes..

While we already know the name of this new chip, Google has chosen not to reveal any further details. The company gives almost no data after mentioning the existence of this chip, but what seems clear is that this new iteration is just like its predecessor. won’t be doomed to win the power metrics either.

At Google, they don’t actually talk about power or efficiency and instead bet a good portion of their improvements. in the field of artificial intelligence.

That’s why they state in their promotional message that the Tensor G2 will “provide even more useful and personalized functionality. to photos, videos, security and voice recognition“.

So it seems clear that Tensor G2’s absolute focus is on Tensor – apart from security. We had the Titan M2 in this area—processors dedicated to machine learning and speech processing tasks.

The original Google Tensor is already Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) for this direction Image Signal Processor (ISP) had an accelerator responsible for executing the HDRNet algorithm.

This system was key to being able to efficiently deliver 4K video at 60fps with HDR on the Pixel 6. Computational photography (and video) are the protagonists here once again, and it’ll be interesting to see what new “tricks” Tensor 2 allows.

Tensor 2, of course, promises more powerful and capable evolutions of these chips. We’re likely to see improvements in the cores of your CPU and GPU as well, but Google seems clear on this. They do not compete on the same terms as the latest products from Qualcomm or Mediatek. The bet is different… and of course the current Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro and of course the last Pixel 6a have lived up to expectations.
