In modern computing history, Apple has put itself on a pedestal when it comes to display technology. Everything from the relatively tiny iPhone to the MacBook and iMac Pro have had bright and accurate displays throughout their existence. While the rest of the industry has largely caught up with and in some cases surpassed Apple, display technology is still the Cupertino giant’s strength. After a period of hiatus in the display market, Apple has released two offerings between 2019 and 2022 that may have put it back on the top of the outdoor display game.
In 2019, Apple released the $4,999 Pro Display XDR, which was angered by the media and the general public due to its $999 minimal adjustable stand, but other than that it’s a great display. Meanwhile, the 6K Pro Display XDR is a full-featured 32-inch LCD. It has a maximum brightness of 1600 nits, a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and supports the DCI-P3 color gamut with reference modes for professional users. In 2022, Apple released the 27-inch 5K Studio Display for $1,599 with a maximum brightness of 600 nits, featuring a 12-megapixel camera, an array of microphones and a stunningly clear speaker setup, and supporting the DCI-P3 color gamut. .
Now rumor has it that Apple is planning another display that will be somewhere between the two existing external displays. According to Display Supply Chain Consultants analyst Ross Young, Apple plans to launch a mini LED display in the first quarter of 2023. Rumor has it that the 27-inch display will combine the strengths and technologies of Apple’s mobile and desktop displays.
The as-yet-unannounced display is said to support ProMotion in addition to the mini LED panel, which means it will have a high refresh rate (possibly 120Hz) and have excellent contrast and brightness ratios without the drawbacks of OLED technology. With matching refresh rates and color profiles, it will make a great companion for the latest MacBook Pro. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s new 27-inch display, like the Studio Display before it, will also be powered by the company’s mobile processors, suggesting it will do some of the calculations.
