This year was not the best for smartphone sales. In the fourth quarter of 2022, global smartphone shipments fell to the lowest level since 2013. IDC attributes this to a significant drop in consumer demand, inflation and economic uncertainty.

On the other hand, demand for used smartphones is expected to increase dramatically worldwide in 2022, with IDC predicting a 10.3% annual growth rate through 2026. That said, it’s worth noting that IDC expects a decline in used smartphone supply for North America.

Apple says the swap program helps recycle old devices. But slow upgrade cycles in recent years, combined with falling costs, won’t do much to encourage people to buy newer models. Of course, it’s not surprising to see this change, but the drop in sales will definitely hurt.
