According to research firm Counterpoint, only two Android devices managed to make it into the ten best-selling smartphones in the world in 2022. These devices were Samsung’s budget models, the Galaxy A03 and Galaxy A13. Elsewhere, Apple’s iPhones dominated, with the iPhone 13 topping the list.
Given Apple’s dominance of the smartphone market, this result is not surprising. As only a few models are released each year, consumers looking to buy an iPhone have limited options, so they choose one of the new iPhone models. On the other hand, the large number of Android devices available means that consumers can always find several models that meet their needs. It could be budget, camera settings or just a better battery. This trend has been going on for several years and is unlikely to change anytime soon.
This means that Apple is increasingly taking advantage of the increasing competition in the Android space. Last year, eight iPhone models made it into the top ten best-selling smartphones for the first time. iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max topped the list from January to August, followed by the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which received critical acclaim for three months after its launch. In December, the iPhone 14 topped the rating.
In total, the iPhone 13 accounted for five percent of all smartphones sold last year, followed by the iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The Samsung Galaxy A13 took fourth place, followed by a number of iPhone models and the Galaxy A03. Counterpoint states that the latest iPhone Pro Max has outsold the Pro and base models for the first time.
Counterpoint predicts that the 10 best-selling smartphones will have a larger share of total shipments in 2023 as Android OEMs shrink their smartphone portfolios. In 2022, there were approximately 3,600 active smartphones on the global market, down 14 percent from over 4,200 in 2021. This trend is expected to continue as brands focus on premium segments to increase profitability.
