One of the latest innovations in the panel industry for smart TVs is undoubtedly the arrival of QD-OLED, a technology patented by Samsung with the aim of tackling the OLED market that has so far been dominated by LG. We’ve even seen some excellent examples with great performance, like Samsung’s S95B TV in 2022 or Sony’s A95K, which again uses Samsung’s panel.

Samsung wouldn’t be the only manufacturer of QD-OLED technology. And a recent report by Nikkei Asia media confirms that Canon has also developed its own QD-OLED panel technology, thus positioning it as a new competitor for Samsung.
Thus, Canon became the second manufacturer of QD-OLED panels right after Samsung Display. Also, there is a plan to lower the cost of the technology. And according to the environment, Canon would manufacture its panels with LeadIt’s a much more common element that replaces Indium, a much harder material to obtain, and therefore one reason why panels have a higher production cost.
The emergence of Canon as a new competitor for the production of QD-OLED panels can significantly reduce the cost of this type of technology, which ultimately benefits the consumer. Additionally, Canon’s technology will be less dependent on India for the production of its panels.
While there isn’t much detail on how Canon’s panels work, we’ll have to wait and see how this new technology performs with changes in material usage and how this affects the image quality of its panels. There is a possibility that Canon will stop using its own technology for DSLR cameras, but if they do, they will be missing a market where entering as a competitor could lead to a very lucrative future for them.
