TVE switches to 4K during the World Cup in Qatar

The person responsible for communicating this information to us is Carlos Javier Garrido, director of RTVE’s Media Relations Area, about whom we asked a number of questions. How will the user adapt to this new channel? For 4K streaming and other relevant details.

Will users be able to open the 4K DTT channel as usual if they have compatible devices?

“Yes, as long as they have 4K receivers they will be able to tune it in like any other DTT channel, and in the case of neighborhood communities with a common antenna, as long as they’re aerial that UHD-4K channel they should put themselves in the hands of a qualified installer.

Until now, some RTVE content was test broadcast via UHD Spain. Will the same channel be used to watch the Qatar World Cup on DTT?

“Two channels are currently broadcasting over UHD Spain: UHD1 in UHD-HDR format and UHD2 in UHD-SDR format. It will be on the UHD-HDR channel where the ‘TVE UHD’ channel will be broadcast, this is how TVE will be called during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar”.

Will the broadcast be for a limited time due to the World Cup, or will all the content of ‘La 1’ be always available live on the 4K channel when the broadcast is over?

“This channel will be broadcast for the duration of the Qatar Football World Cup, but we are working on the possibility that RTVE will be able to continue rebroadcasts of Qatar World Cup matches for at least a few more months.

Can a 4K channel be watched online? Namely from RTVE Play, UHD Spain and other platforms and devices.

“Cannot be viewed online.”

Are there any additional steps required besides needing compatible hardware to set the 4K channel?

“There is no need for an additional step. A normal tuning will be done on the individual antennas, and on the common antennas, like all other channels, it will have to put an amplifier of the channel on which the multiplexer, which currently accommodates two emissions, is emitted. UHD Spain, where they should have the services of a competent installer.”

In this way, we understand that UHD Spain’s UHD1 channel to be replaced by ‘TVE UHD’ during the broadcast of World Cup matches in Qatar. Of course, those who want to enjoy this channel must have a 4K television with a built-in DVB-T2 tuner to see the channel correctly.

In addition to RTVE, Movistar joins the 4K bandwagon to present all World Cup matches in this resolution. However, in this case, it will be necessary to have a contract with the LaLiga package or the All football package. Another option is World Goal, which offers 64 World Cup matches and exclusive programming for 19.99 euros.
