Most of the Smart TVs released have a special display mode for watching movies. Known in some cases as the ‘Filmmaker’ or ‘Filmmaker’, the aim is to calibrate the television for color, brightness, contrast and other parameters so that the reproduction of the film is as similar as possible to the intent of its authors. But this special mode usually limited to content in SDR and HDR10.

That will soon change as the UHD Alliance confirms it is working with television manufacturers to introduce Filmmaker mode, which can display HDR content in Dolby Vision via this format and with the benefits of serial calibration in this mode.

Reproduction closest to the author’s intent

The information was provided by Michael Zink, president and executive director of the UHD Alliance, who was present at an event scheduled by LG to learn more about the LG OLED G3’s features.

While this TV will continue to offer a Filmmaker mode limited to SDR and HDR10 content, the addition of Dolby Vision to this picture mode is under development and May come next to TVs to be released in 2024. Currently, the closest we have today is the ‘Dolby Vision Dark’ mode implemented in some televisions compatible with this HDR format.

Filmmaker mode, on the other hand, was released in 2019 as a way to preserve the author’s intent in the works we watch. By enabling this mod, frame interpolation functions disabled and altering the image with optimal parameters to recreate the content as faithfully as possible, among other anti-aliasing technologies.

While there is no word on which manufacturers will have Dolby Vision in Filmmaker mode, it is very likely that LG will be one of the first manufacturers to adopt these measures, as these details were revealed during a company event.

Another option the UHD Alliance is working on is Function to automatically activate Filmmaker mode when playing content compatible with this mode, it adapts more to what the user sees on their television. This is already available on some TVs and also includes the TV’s use of ambient light sensors to detect outside lighting.
