Four years later, 8K TVs aren’t taking off. It’s getting harder to convince consumers

High-end televisions consist of 4K and 8K panels. Although everything indicates this, today both decisions coexist. Things are not going well for 8K. The failure of manufacturers to bring such televisions into homes around the world is causing the estimates to be lower than expected.

8K is not convincing and Omdia envisions a not-so-optimistic plan

Recently, TV manufacturers have tried to promote 8K because of its excellent image scaling and processing capabilities. Maria Rua Aguete, senior research director at Omdia, detailed the new predictions for 8K televisions.

“According to the latest research from Omdia, which I recently shared on the NAB show for my session focusing on the reality of UHD deployments, 8K TV is unattractive to consumers. Our specific research has found that everyone will only have 8K screens in their 2.7 million households by the end of 2026.”

It’s not the first time this analytics firm has offered slightly optimistic forecasts for 8K. In previous cases, Omdia predicts a total of 9 million 8K TVs in homes by 2025Quite a distinct difference from those recently announced.

The key points leading to this conclusion for Omdia are: No really compelling reason to buy an 8K TV, the decline in distribution of these televisions in the last fiscal quarter of 2021 and the weak sales of Samsung in the sector, which distributed 18% less 8K televisions compared to the previous year. It’s also a point of difference as China doesn’t bet much on 8K compared to North America and Europe.

The lack of 8K content is another of the main doubts when buying television with the said resolution. YouTube offers the only video created in 8K, but The plans of the most popular subscription services are not yet known. Also, there doesn’t seem to be a trend towards the physical format, implying that it will be difficult for us to get discs that offer 8K content.

If we compare it to the journey 4K has had since the first televisions were launched in 2012-2013, It wasn’t until 2016 that the ‘UHD Premium’ standard was designedoffers high dynamic range technologies (HDR) with this resolution. Adoption of televisions with better resolution and technology is something that needs to be given time, especially since there is hardware in homes that often changes every few years.
