OceanGate announced that five people on the missing submarine lost their lives less than two hours before the eight-hour expedition.

“We believe our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his sons Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding and Paul-Henri Narjolet have sadly passed away,” the company said in a statement.

The US Coast Guard said a “wreck field” was discovered near the Titanic while searching for the missing Titan submarine. “These men were true explorers who shared a special spirit of adventure and a deep passion for exploring and preserving the world’s oceans. Our hearts go out to these five people and every single member of their family at this tragic time,” the statement said.

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed at a press conference Thursday that the wreckage found was consistent with the disastrous pressure loss in Titan’s chamber.
