Scientists update a collision forecast with Earth asteroid Bennu

NASA recently updated its estimate of the probability of asteroid Bennu colliding with Earth in the next 300 years. According to new calculations, the probability is between 1 and 1750, which is slightly higher than previously thought. Two statisticians estimated the probability of a space object colliding with a planet.

The space agency, which tracked Benna to detect the asteroid in 1999, revised the estimate based on new data. Calculations showed that the probability is slightly increased – 1 chance for the Land of Benn to crash into the Earth by 1750.

But scientists from Harvard University are confident that the events in the science fiction movie “Armageddon” will not be repeated. Experts also reminded the mission that NASA plans to launch in November. The scientists want to find out on the spot whether the spacecraft’s impact on a large space rock will help change the asteroid’s trajectory when needed.

Lucas B. Janson and Morgan Oster, associate professors at Harvard University, compared Benn’s chances of colliding with Earth. This is also possible, also:

  • Enter the “apple” by throwing darts at a target with your eyes closed.

(101955) Bennu is a near-Earth asteroid belonging to the Apollo group discovered as part of the LINEAR asteroid search project at the Socorro Observatory. In 2013, it was named after the Bennu bird, a symbol of the resurrection of Osiris, the king of the afterlife in ancient Egyptian mythology.
