Both universities’ work (article one and article two), published online in the Journal of Animal Ecology, builds on much of the existing research that suggests bees are in serious trouble. As one of the most important insects on the planet, they are under particular threat and so is the human diet. 71-75% of the world’s food products depend on bee pollination.
It turned out that as bees develop under stress, bee wings become more jagged and asymmetrical.
As hot and humid conditions are predicted to stress bumblebees more, the fact that these conditions become more frequent due to climate change means bumblebees may have a hard time in the 21st century.
says senior co-author Richard Gill of Imperial College London.
It is unclear whether this affects their overall health or performance in any way. However, this may be just the beginning. Further warming is likely to exacerbate the effects on bees as it does to turtles.
Scientists are now trying Find out how bees respond to certain climatic conditions and take actionto help support the health of these critical insects.
Many scientists are working in this direction. For example, not so long ago, Israel created a clever beehive that could potentially prevent the global extinction of bees. It reduced bee mortality by 80% by controlling a range of indicators and threats. Such a hive is equipped with sensitive robotic systems, computer vision and artificial intelligence, allowing to monitor the bees and their needs in real time and instantly trigger protection mechanisms.
