Last Friday (9) China announced the discovery of a new mineral extracted from the Moon.
Nicknamed Changesite-(Y), a tribute to Chang’e, the goddess of the moon in Chinese mythology, the name is also the namesake of the 2020 Chang’e-5 mission, which sampled moon dust.
Lunar Mineral Changesite-(Y)
Collected on the surface of the Moon, as well as 6.5 meters from the surface, where it is believed to have been the site of volcanic activity, the sample weighs about 1.73 and was donated to 33 organizations for research.
The sample was described as “a phosphate mineral in the form of columnar crystals found in particles of lunar basalt.r” in a statement issued by China’s National Space Administration (CNSA) and China Atomic Energy Administration (CAEA).
It has a crystalline structure that was separated and examined by X-ray diffraction, and they managed to find a single crystal particle among 140,000 particles from lunar samples with a diameter of about 10 microns – less than a tenth of the average diameter of a human hair. This careful study was carried out by researchers from the Beijing Scientific Research Institute of Uranium Geology.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Natural Resources, CNNC and other departments have received permission to conduct selective exploration of the moon, and foreign scientists and foreign students also participated in joint research. Recent advances in magma differentiation, cosmic weathering, helium-3 gas conversion, and biological energy have now been achieved, which are of great enlightening significance for understanding the origin and evolution of the Moon, studying the efficient use of lunar resources, and achieving “zero energy” extraterrestrial environment.
Five more lunar minerals have previously been discovered by other countries such as the US and Russia. Changesite-(Y) is the sixth mineral discovered on the Moon and has already received the approval of the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA), based in Bochum, Germany.
