The decline in the PC market is affecting the revenue and market share of processor manufacturers AMD and Intel. The latter is on the rise again in a shrinking market.

The PC market is in the doldrums and both Intel and AMD are feeling the effects. Both manufacturers are fighting for market share, but both had to accept a significant drop in sales in the past quarter. However, one decline is not another and the declining market is impacting Intel and AMD differently.

AMD appears to be having trouble selling its Zen 4 CPUs, while Intel’s latest Raptor Lake processors roll off the assembly line smoothly. The result is noticeable: More and more Intel-based computers are being sold over the counter, so AMD has to be content with a market share of 12.1 percent. Intel gets 87.9. Last year was different: the higher demand and better availability of AMD chips compared to those of Intel caused the former’s market share to rise to 21.9 percent.

AMD wins in the data center market

A different scenario is emerging in the lucrative data center market. Intel remains by far the biggest player, but sees a market share drop to 70 percent. AMD seems to have worked its way up to around 20 percent market share. And rightly so: AMD’s Epyc Genoa processors are in most cases superior to the Intel Scalable Sapphire Rapids CPUs that were introduced later. However, Intel has so much momentum in the market that it easily remains the champion.

Overall, however, Intel and AMD will have to lick their wounds this quarter. Improvement is in sight by the end of the year. Analysts assume that a new hardware update cycle is imminent. In theory, this should boost PC sales again.
