Both Google with Android and Apple with iOS closely monitor the content of their app stores, as well as the interest they arouse in users, something that is the most normal thing in the world, and there are many reasons to explain it. Now, both technologies have surprised us from time to time by taking a feature that was initially only available through third-party apps or plugins and adding it natively to their operating systems. This is of course a positive for the users, but also an inconvenience for the developers whose income depended on these applications, and because of this they are forced to improve them enough that users are still willing to pay for them.
Well, it looks like Google is at it again, and this time with a feature that could mean a significant financial savings for users who can take advantage of it. As we can read in 9to5Google, Google is preparing a dashcam feature for Androidwhich will allow us to use our smartphone to record video continuously while we drive, a particularly handy feature if we have an accident that we need to document in some way.
A quick look at Google Play is enough to verify that there is a very wide range of apps that are used to provide this feature to Android smartphones, some of which have excellent ratings from their users. However, if the scope of this feature that Google is working on is wide enough (I’ll explain this later), it will probably be the circumstance I mentioned at the beginning, because the convenience of the feature built into the operating system, added to the fact that it translates into you don’t have to share data with a third-party designed appmakes this option much more attractive.
As I said, the key point will be the scope of the dashcam function for Android, and this is that, at least in the first case it will initially only come to Google Pixel smartphones, as well as a small selection of third-party devices, such as Nothing Phone (1). However, it may not take us too long to find out, because according to the mentioned publication, its development already seems to be advanced enough that its release could happen very, very soon.
You can find the on-board camera function in the Emergency application, owned by Google and currently present in the Google Pixel and some other models that we can imagine will also get this feature. However, it is possible that Google has set some additional requirement, for example, that their camera has some kind of image stabilization feature to prevent the vibrations that normally occur in vehicles when they are moving, from negatively affecting the quality of the recording.
