According to preliminary analysis, the remains belong to two men aged approximately 55 years and older. It is believed that they died in an earthquake that occurred as a result of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which covered the city with ash in 79 AD.
Most likely, they died when the earthquake destroyed the wall in the room they were trying to hide in. The skeletons lay on their sides with their legs up, one with a ring on his left hand. One of the men raised his hand as if in self-defense. According to experts, death may have occurred due to numerous injuries caused by the collapse of part of the building.
There was also an amphora, pots, vases and other vessels in the room where the dead were found. Next to the victims lay a bundle of fabric, which used to be a necklace and beads for coins. In a nearby room, the researchers found a fresco-shaped home altar and a narrow bathroom with a toilet.
