Airbus unveiled the innovative Bird of Prey aircraft concept, designed to inspire future aerospace engineers, highlighting the impact they can create using the company’s research in hybrid electric powertrains, active control systems and advanced composite structures.

The project presented in the UK is a hybrid-electric turboprop aircraft for regional air transport. Airbus says it was inspired by the efficient mechanics of a bird, with its wing and tail structure mimicking that of a raptor and individually controlled feathers for active flight control.

Martin Aston, a senior executive at Airbus, said the concept was designed to encourage young people to consider an exciting career in the critical aviation industry.

“One of the priorities for the entire industry is how to make aviation greener by making flights cleaner, greener and quieter than ever before. From our work on the A350 XWB airliner, we know that nature has taught us some of the best design lessons through biomicroscopy, said Martin Aston, Airbus Senior Manager.
