Kubuntu Focus has announced the launch of the M2 Gen 5 laptop, which has nothing to envy of its Windows counterparts as it features the most advanced processors and graphics from Intel and NVIDIA.
Unfortunately, 2023 won’t be the year of Linux either… A free system is large mobility or supercomputing and has a great presence in servers and IoT, but there is no way to achieve a market share that we can consider acceptable. We have discussed this on many occasions. Microsoft has beastly control over the OEM channel, and that’s where Windows’ huge presence comes from, as few users change the system that comes standard.
And that without a larger market share Linux support is limited in hardware and software development. Hence the importance of releases like this, which we would like to see in greater numbers and not only from niche integrators, but also from major PC developers who should offer them as a necessary alternative to Windows.
Kubuntu Focus is one of the integrators who, like System76, are committed to Linux. Your latest offer is “fifth generation M2”not to be confused with Apple’s M2 or M2 SSDs connected to PCIe 5. But it’s a good “beast” one of the most powerful Linux laptops to date.
It is based on panel screen 15.6″ IPS diagonal, with a native resolution of QHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) and a refresh rate of 240 Hz, which is the highest in the industry for this resolution. The equipment of this Focus offers various internal hardware configuration options up to powerful Intel Core i9-13900HX with 24 cores. The graphics part is not left behind as it offers the latest generation dedicated NVIDIA up to the top RTX 4070.
When positioned as a mobile workstation, the total RAM capacity increases 64 GB and high-speed DDR5 at 4800 MHz. For internal storage, the Focus installs two M.2 connectors with a capacity for 4 Tbytes with dual PCIe 4.0 SSDs. It lacks nothing in terms of connectivity, with two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt support, HDMI and Display Port outputs, two USB-A 3.2 ports and audio outputs.
Internet connectivity is via 2.5Gb Ethernet LAN, in addition to Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5 is also supported. Its keyboard is a full-sized, backlit chiclet with numeric keypad, and is complemented by a generously sized touchpad and a 2-megapixel web camera.
Kubuntu Focus M2 Gen 5 pre-installs Kubuntu 22.04 LTS with an optimized kernel, KDE Plasma and full disk encryption (optional). It is available from $1,895 and it’s a great team for those who are betting on ready-to-use GNU/Linux.
