After two days of problems, Asus has released a new software update that fixes the previous buggy update.

You’re not alone: ​​everyone who had auto-update turned on got a nasty surprise last week. Blocked routers worldwide only to restart afterwards. After a few minutes the problem repeated itself again. Particularly strange: Anyone who had deactivated the update function still received the “bad” update.

In a public statement, Asus points out a problem in the latest ASD, a built-in security component. It contained an error in the configuration of the server settings, which quickly filled the router’s memory. As soon as this is full, the router blocks and then restarts to make room in the memory again. This process was repeated endlessly. Factory resetting your router fixed the problem.

The problem is that such an ASD is automatically downloaded by each router, regardless of whether you have auto-update enabled or not. Asus is not yet clear how this happened. The manufacturer may still be able to push minor updates for security reasons if the customer doesn’t want it, but that shouldn’t have these consequences.

Asus fixed the problem after 48 hours and distributed a patch to all devices. It seems to be working, all complaints about weak internet coverage have been resolved. Complaints about how annoying this case has been for many users worldwide will continue for a while. Asus’ reputation as a router manufacturer has already suffered a severe blow.
