G7 leaders on Saturday called for the promotion and adoption of technical standards to ensure the “credibility” of artificial intelligence (AI), saying regulation of the technology has not kept pace with its rapid development.

While the G7 leaders meeting in Hiroshima, Japan, acknowledged that approaches to achieving a “common vision and goal for robust AI may differ,” they said in their statement that guidelines for digital technologies such as AI should be “in line with our common democratic values.

The resolution comes as the European Union, as a member of the G7, moved closer this month to adopting an AI regulation, perhaps the world’s first comprehensive AI legislation that could serve as a model for advanced economies.

“We want AI systems to be accurate, reliable, secure and non-discriminatory, no matter where they come from,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Friday.

Executives recognized the need to evaluate the use of generative AI

G7 leaders called for “immediately to analyze the opportunities and challenges of generative AI” – a technology industry that has gained popularity thanks to the ChatGPT application. Developed by OpenIA, it caught the attention of Elon Musk and a group of AI experts who sounded the alarm in March, calling for a six-month pause in pushing more powerful systems because of possible risks to society.

A month later, EU officials called on world leaders to look for ways to regulate AI technologies, noting that they are developing at a faster pace than expected.

Despite disagreements over approaches to AI regulation, G7 leaders reached consensus on Friday, creating a ministerial forum known as the Hiroshima AI Process. This forum will focus on discussion by the end of this year on issues related to generative AI, such as copyright and misinformation.
