Meteor Lake-S, which would become the next generation of Intel desktop processors, is not finishing consolidating its future launch. First it looked like it would appear, then there were rumors of its cancellation, then the possibility of its launch returned, and now rumors of its cancellation are back.
The OneRaichu leaker is trying to keep an eye on future releases from Intel and apparently the chip giant as well would decide to cancel Meteor Lake-S and move forward with Arrow Lake-S, a series that would see the light of day sometime in 2024. Last April, we reported that both processor lines could see the light of day at the same time as part of the fourteenth generation of Intel Core processors. However, the company may have decided to change course and bet everything on Arrow Lake.
The plans we detailed last month were that Meteor Lake would cover the Core i3 and Core i5 lineup, while Arrow Lake would cover the Core i7 and Core i9 lineup. This would be possible due to the fact that both lines are expected to be supported by the LGA-1851 socket, so the scenario would be similar to that of Alder Lake and Raptor Lake, which are compatible with the LGA-1700 socket and subsequently the door to reuse the oriented board on the first to connect the processor of the second.
I am so sad that Meteor Lake-S died.
RIP
(In the May RM for the intel client, MTL-S is permanently deprecated and ARL-S 6+8 dies instead.)— Raichu (@OneRaichu) May 22, 2023
While this information is rumours, OneRaich has been very open about saying that it is “very sad about the death of Meteor Lake-S“. The consequence of this is that Arrow Lake-S is now trying to come with a maximum configuration of six high-performance cores and eight low-power cores., which is a reduction from the expected eight high-performance cores and sixteen efficient ones. Expect to use Lion Cove for high performance and Skymont for performance.
Intel’s alleged move is in line with what AMD is supposed to be doing, as it seems that the red giant will keep the maximum configuration of sixteen physical cores for the Ryzen 8000. The two giants of x86 processors may be reserving better cards for the future, since the sales of PC components will not return and the dark year 2023 that some predictions are confirmed. With such low expectations, it is likely that both Intel and AMD decided to wait for a better time to introduce generations of processors with a more revolutionary spirit.
It is important to note that none of this has official support, but a depressed market is a challenge for companies to take minimal risk.
