Hyperspectral interference Orbital Sidekick captures images from the first two satellites launched in April during the SpaceX Transporter-7 joint flight.

“We recently got the first light and it was very exciting,” said Kathy Corcoran, OSK’s vice president for government affairs, at the GEOINT Symposium on 22 May. “We currently have two healthy payloads in orbit.”

Another OSK satellite is scheduled to enter Earth orbit in June. Two more flights are planned for October. Corcoran says the sixth OSK satellite will be launched in February 2024 Space News .

OSK’s Global Hyperspectral Observation Satellite Cluster, or GHOST, consisting of six satellites will see some locations every day, providing frequent return visits. GHOST will provide hyperspectral images with a resolution of 8.3 meters per pixel and panchromatic images with a resolution of 3.1 meters per pixel.

Hyperspectral data has many potential applications. OSK has mainly focused on the energy and government markets to date.

On the government side, OSK works with the US Air Force, the US Space Force, the National Intelligence Service, the US Geological Survey, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and In-Q-Tel.

OSK is the technology partner of the Smart Pipeline Integrity Program, a consortium focusing on pipeline leak prevention and detection technologies in the energy sector.

academic partnerships

OSK has recently started working with the Rochester Institute of Technology Imaging Center.

“We look forward to expanding our partnerships, particularly within the research community, and we will soon have a range of hyperspectral data available to our end users,” Corcoran said. “Our priority is to partner with researchers at colleges and universities or nonprofit research labs right now.”

OSK asks researchers to contribute to achieve this goal.

“Tell me about your work; only the best moments so we can speed things up,” he asked on the OSK website, LinkedIn and Twitter. “What are the most attractive types of OSK support for you and your professional network, and why?”
