Mexican migrants denounce ‘modern slave’ network in Canada

This Sunday, Mexican migrants denounced networks of alleged recruiters who lure them into the illusion of getting a job in Canada and then turn them into “modern-day slaves” as they exploit them and herd them into homes of up to 15 people.

“Everything is a scam: they charge you $600 (Canadian or $441) a month for rent and demand another $5,000 on the grounds that they are making your asylum in Canada,” he said. EFE Kevin, the Mexican who was deported today from Ottawa to Cancun.

The undocumented immigrant recalled that he borrowed money from his relatives to go to Canada, deceived by these alleged recruiters, in the hope of getting a job and earning dollars.

All of this is a lie, please don’t be fooled, they will only take you to Canada to exploit you to make you into slaves in the 21st century.

Recruiters take advantage of the legal labor mobility schemes that exist between Mexico and Canada to hook victims.

The work programs offered under Canadian labor law are provincial, not federal, and hourly pay varies.

For example, wages in Ontario are $15.83 an hour and will go up next October, and in British Columbia it’s $15.35 an hour.

Prior to Kevin’s deportation, the Canadian authorities in Mexico, who did not want to be identified, warned him not to fall for this type of fraud and abuse: in specific and special cases.

The trap that Mexicans fall into is the illusion of the Canadian dream being promoted through social media as they ensure that the government of that country has a high demand for labor and programs to facilitate entry.

However, many of them are cases of fraud.

Recruitment networks deceive us, they take us to Canada, but they only exploit us, turn us into slaves, using sophisticated smuggling and human trafficking operations.

inhuman conditions

Canadian sources said they have been rescuing migrants who were working in inhumane conditions in recent months.

“Mexicans lived crowded, paying big money for rent, food and other services,” they reported that a few weeks ago they deported four residents of Yucatán, in southern Mexico.

The most recent case reported by the York Regional Police just north of Toronto involved the rescue of 64 Mexicans from an international human trafficking ring.

“The victims lived in poverty and were forced to work hard for little pay, while their exploiters benefited and lived in luxury,” the report says.

Another of the rescued immigrants said that an acquaintance from his town in Mexico “offered me a job in Canada in exchange for a payment of 70,000 pesos ($3,900), including a plane ticket and a supposed work visa,” which is actually an e-mail. Travel Authorization (ETA) issued by the Government of Canada.

“I fell into the trap, the recruiter didn’t have my work visa, he only gave me a phone number and the name of a ‘contact person’ in Canada,” he said.

The “contact person” took him to the house and informed the immigrant that he would pay $600 a month for a room in a house with more than 15 people, with a shared bathroom and kitchen.

They then took him to a lawyer who was supposed to handle his “refugee” case to get him a work permit, “but because I didn’t have $5,000, they turned me down.”

Today in Mexico, he sadly admitted that he had a terrible time, “because the work was hard, low-paid and unstable, I lived in worse conditions than at home in Mexico.”
