The trinity of tech giants announced plans to implement the passwordless authorization standard developed by the FIDO Alliance together with the World Wide Web Consortium into their products. Starting next year, according to the developers, users will be able to forget traditional passwords.

The companies promised to implement the possibility of passwordless authorization on all mobile, desktop and browser platforms. In other words, this option will appear on gadgets running Android and iOS, computers on Windows and MacOS, as well as in Chrome, Edge and Safari browsers.

Apple, Google and Microsoft will make passwords unnecessary…

“Password-only authentication is one of the biggest security issues on the internet, and managing so many passwords is tiring for consumers, often resulting in them reusing the same passwords across multiple services. The consequences of this could be account hacking, data leakage and even identity theft,” the FIDO Alliance said in a statement.

It will be possible to log into any account without entering a password using a smartphone, which serves as an authentication tool for applications, websites and other digital services. To do this, it will be enough to unlock the account in any safe way, by entering a PIN code, drawing a pattern or using a fingerprint scanner.

If it is necessary to authorize on the site in a browser on a computer, the user will also receive a notification on his smartphone, which requires you to confirm your identity using one of the above methods. After that, the site will be logged in automatically.

“The full transition to a world without passwords will begin with consumers making it a natural part of their lives. Any viable solution must be more secure, simpler, and faster than passwords and legacy multi-factor authentication methods,” said Alex Simons, corporate vice president of identity program management at Microsoft.

The introduction of passwordless authorization in Apple, Google and Microsoft products is scheduled for next year, but no specific dates have yet been indicated.
