Why do drivers stick CDs upside down under the windshield?
Many drivers saw cars and trucks on the road, under the windshields of which CDs were lined up. But why? There are many versions of this. The AvtoVzglyad portal found out why some drivers actually put CDs under their windshields.

You’ve probably all seen cars on the road where the top of the windshield, or even the entire perimeter, is littered with CDs. But not many people know that the peak of their “combat” use fell in the 90s-2000s. The reasons why the transom washers blocked part of the windshield are described differently. However, only two are true.

Why exactly in the 90s and 2000s was the high point for fashion to stick discs under the windshield? Well, here we have to look at the automotive industry and the development of media technology.

The CD was first released in 1982 and hit store shelves in Japan the same year. It was Billy Joel’s 1978 album 52nd Street. However, the very first group to be included on a non-commercial CD was ABBA with their album The Visitors. And then we go – the CD format started taking the planet by storm.

However, all these technologies reached the USSR only at the beginning of the 90s from the 2000s. At the same time, more and more often not cassette, but CD radio recorders were found in cars. At that time, China hadn’t yet managed to invent anything and everything, and even AliExpress didn’t exist, where you could order all kinds of accessories, including for storing CDs. So the drivers thought about putting CDs under the “lobash”. However, soon someone “discovered” another – the miraculous property of disks.

In times of digital underdevelopment, our traffic cops stood behind every thicket with so-called hair dryers – handheld radars that measure speed. The data displayed on these devices varied. And without a video recording, any driver could be accused of speeding. In general, as it really was – history is silent.

But among car owners, it is rumored that CDs somehow create the effect of invisibility for such radars, in effect acting as a passive anti-radar. Since then, many fines have been handed out. The craft technology of stealth, in fact, the myth itself was quickly forgotten, preferring to spend money and buy a high-quality radar detector. But CDs can still be found on car windows. What’s the catch?

And again, as in the case of storing a plethora of CDs, practice, driving experience and the imperfection of cars play a role here. Usually CDs can be found on trucks these days. Long-haul drivers generally tend to decorate their vehicles in every possible way. But in this case, the discs serve them really well and act as a solid compact sun visor.

In general, there is no mystique in fashion to carry CDs under the windshield. Ordinary decoration or storage and sun protection function.
