OSCE condemns Erdogan’s ‘unjustified electoral advantage’

Restrictions on free speech and media bias have given Recep Tayyip Erdogan “unfair advantage”the second round of the presidential elections this Sunday in Turkey, in which an Islamist politician was elected third timeas condemned today by international observers.

Yesterday, Islamist Recep Tayyip Erdogan won the second round of Turkey’s presidential election after a near-total vote check, the country’s Electoral Commission announced.

Erdogan received 52.1% of votes and his rival, the Social Democrat Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who won 47.9%, out of a count of 99.5% of the votes, Ahmet Yener, chairman of the electoral commission, said yesterday in a public speech.

On May 14, none of the candidates won the necessary majority to become the head of state in the first round of the presidential elections, which were held together with the parliamentary ones, in connection with which second round.

The elections were considered one of the most important for Turkey, as the opposition believed they had a chance shift erdogan and change his policies after his popularity was affected by the cost of living crisis during the February 6, 2023 earthquake.

Instead, the victory bolstered his image, already reshaping the domestic, economic, security, and foreign policies of this country of 85 million people.
