The United Nations Refugee Agency (Acnur) warned today that over 100,000 refugees fleeing the conflict have already arrived in Chad and asked the international community to help take care of these people.

“The number of new arrivals has crossed the mark of 100,000 people,” he stressed. UNHCR in a statement released in the Chadian capital N’Djamena.

Since the start of the conflict in Sudan on April 15, about 100,000 refugees have fled the violence. found refuge in eastern Chad, especially in the provinces of Ouaddai, Sila and Wadi Fira.

“Reports from our teams at the border show that new wave of arrivals“, the UN agency said.

Most of these new arrivals come from Darfur, a region of Sudan that has been hit hard by violence and is experiencing growing instability.

According to the UNHCR, “it is estimated that up to 200,000 people may be forced to flee east of Chad in the next three months.”

Before this crisis Chad has already taken in about 588,770 refugees.including about 410,000 Sudanese who fled the conflict in Darfur in March 2023, nearly 128,000 refugees from the Central African Republic, and about 21,300 Nigerians fleeing the violence of jihadist groups boko haram and more than 28,000 Cameroonians have been affected by communal tensions.

Despite enormous needs, the humanitarian response to these there hasn’t been a crisis the necessary funding.

“For families displaced by the (Sudanese) crisis, humanitarian aid is a beacon of hope. We rely on the compassion and generosity of our partners to come together and ensure that critical protection and vital support are provided,” said Laura Lo Castro, UNHCR Representative in Chad.

UNHCR seeks $214.1 million for provide protection and assistance to displaced persons force in Chad, including urgently needed $72.4 million to care for refugees fleeing the conflict in Sudan.

This conflict, in which the Sudanese army has pitted the powerful Paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (FAR) since 15 April, has caused at least 850 dead and over 5,500 injured and caused internal and external displacement of more than 1.3 million people, according to the United Nations.
