According to the news of Xinhua news agency, drilling of the deepest well in China’s oil-rich Xinjiang region began on May 30. The narrow shaft will enter the earth from more than 10,000 meters deep and pass through more than ten continental layers.

Scientists hope to reach rocks that belong to the Cretaceous system, which is about 145 million years old. “The complexity of building a drilling project can be compared to moving a large truck along two thin steel cables,” said Sun Jinsheng, a scientist at the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

According to China National Petroleum Corp., which is leading the operation, the project will test deep underground drilling technologies as well as provide data on the Earth’s interior. The dive is expected to take 457 days.

Exploring the depths of the Cretaceous system can help identify mineral and energy sources and assess the risks of environmental disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The deepest man-made well in the world is located in Russia, near Murmansk. Its depth is 12,262 meters. The diameter of its upper part is only 92 cm, and the lower part is 21.5 cm. After a series of accidents, the well was closed in 1991 – after 20 years of drilling. Source
