To protect sensitive customer data and internal work, Brazilian banks have begun to take restrictive measures regarding the use of ChatGPT during work. A survey prepared by UOL’s Tilt found that at least two of them already have internal guidelines for all employees.

Among the major banks currently present in Brazil, Bradesco and Banco do Brasil are already aware of the use of artificial intelligence at work.. Caixa, Itaú Unibanco and Santander did not respond to the portal’s request, leaving open information about how ChatGPT is used by employees.

Febraban (Brazilian Federation of Banks) told Tilt that there are no rules in the country for financial institutions to use ChatGPT and it is up to each of them to choose the best way to deal with it.

In consultation with the portal, Banco do Brasil said that it did not completely ban the use of the tool, but began to take restrictive measures against ChatGPT. However, he showed interest in this type of platform to help at certain times during work.

What do banks say about it?

Banco do Brasil underlined that “it continues to monitor market innovations and evaluates the use of resources that can ultimately contribute to the creation of value for customers and employees, always paying attention to protection and safety.” If anything, he pointed out that “among those topics is the possibility of open AI like ChatGPT.”

However, Banco do Brasil emphasized that this use would be moderate and under appropriate conditions. Evidence of this is the fact that they emphasized that artificial intelligence will continue to be used for “use in certain situations, protection of security policies.”

Bradesco, meanwhile, ended up taking a somewhat tougher measure. The bank went so far as to ban the use of the free version of ChatGPT among employees. However, he emphasized that there is a difference in using the OpenAI solution and the tool itself.

“The use of ChatGPT in its public instance is not provided to employees. It’s worth clarifying that there’s a difference between using the public ChatGPT and a contracted OpenAI solution that uses the company’s engines but stores the data in the bank’s private environment.

According to Bradesco’s research and economics department, the bank has implemented the responsible and ethical use of AI. They recently started using ChatGPT as an additional tool for analyzing official texts issued by the Central Bank of Brazil.
