Hydrogen engine will keep the truck efficient
New Komatsu 930E engine., now called NuGen, has eight 100 kW hydrogen fuel cells. They will provide the power needed by the vehicle’s traction motors to move up to 315 tons of ore, the same lifting capacity as truck It was equipped with a 16-cylinder diesel engine. Allied with the new engine is a battery developed Advanced Engineering Williams (subsidiary of the Formula 1 team Williams) with a capacity of 1.1 MW.
OUR Anglo-American has 40 trucks Komatsu 390E at a platinum mine located in Mogalakwena. The company’s plan is to refurbish its entire fleet at several mines around the world with the new hydrogen engine by 2040, 80% of the diesel fuel consumed in mines is used by these trucks. Each of them consumes 1 million liters of fossil fuels per year. 3% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions come from these cars.
The company wants to reduce carbon emissions in its production
Hydrogen used as a fuel for Komatsu 390E uses a solar power plant in the mine itself. 140 MW are used to separate hydrogen from water, turning it into fuel for a car. As a result, the entire truck production chain is carbon neutral. As with the fleet conversion plan, Anglo-American wants to become carbon neutral by the end of this decade.
