Mac will be able to run games made for Windows

During WWDC 2023, Apple also confirmed that it is monitoring changes in the gaming environment on its platforms and will have a tool that will allow your Mac to run games built for the Windows system. This will be similar to what has already been seen in Valve’s Proton, allowing developers and interested people to translate its language and have performance similar to DirectX 12 on its operating system.

Thanks to this, all developers will be able to instantly communicate information about their games, which will allow them to see their performance without changes, in order to understand what they need to do in a possible port to a future version. Called the “Game Porting Toolkit”, it is basically an emulation that allows studios to understand macOS features and code without headaches.

Technically, the Game Porting Toolkit will take Windows APIs on Intel x86 systems and port them to Apple Silicon. Keyboard, mouse, control input, audio, network, file system and Direct3D API will be transferred to the Mac operating system to simulate operation.

Apple’s intention is obviously to be a viable option for PC gaming, which has ended up being dropped from multiple releases in recent years. During a live demo during the event, Engineering Projects Director Aiswarya Srinivassan demonstrated the tool during the launch of The Medium, a game released in 2021 by the Bloober Team.

Apple Support for Mac

It’s worth noting that the support the company offers for the continued evolution of Mac systems is remarkable, and the following models will ship with the Ultrachip M2, a 76-core GPU that’s 30% faster than the M1 Ultra. It hasn’t had final tests yet in terms of games, but it could be a major breakthrough for Apple in the entire development market.

With the addition of the Game Porting Toolkit and Metal Shader Converter, which will automatically convert GPU shaders to Metal, you have tools that will dramatically change the way developers bring games to their platform. Considering the time and effort you’ll save with these features, they’ll also reduce studios’ excuses for not bringing their experience to their PCs.
