UK to host world’s first AI summit

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Wednesday that he will host the world’s first AI summit this year to develop a joint approach between countries to limit potential doomsday risks, Techxplore.com reported.

“Artificial intelligence has incredible potential to change our lives for the better. But we have to make sure it’s designed and used safely,” Sunak said in Washington before meeting with US President Joe Biden at the White House on Thursday.

“We’ve invented paradigm-shifting new technologies time and again throughout history and used them for the benefit of humanity. That’s what we have to do again.”

A Sunaka spokesperson said after the G7 call to action in Japan last month that the summit is expected to take place in the fall and will bring together “agreeing countries” to form a regulatory response. The spokesperson denied that the summit was designed to counter efforts to use artificial intelligence for authoritarian purposes like China and Russia.

But while a post-Brexit Britain hopes to also take on the future global AI regulator, the US and the European Union are already moving forward with their own direct dialogue on the rapidly growing technology.

Altar said Britain was at risk of being kicked out.

“We have to make sure that our country is the leader when it comes to artificial intelligence, because the facts show it,” he told the BBC in Washington.

“If you look at the number of companies, the amount of money invested, the quality of our research, no other democratic country other than the United States has such a strong force in AI.”

Sunak, 43, is almost half the age of 80-year-old Biden, but denied that the US president was unaware of the new technology after a British adviser warned that it could destroy humanity within two years.

“We actually discussed AI with the president when we were in Japan (at the G7), and I know he is well aware of the challenges and opportunities it presents,” Sunak told Britain’s TalkTV before the summit. Pointing to the US support for the summit to be held in the UK, “But I also know that the president is considering the threats our countries will face in the future and is confident that we are working together to protect our countries from them.”
