Research IDC: Job Opportunities for IT Operations in Free Fall

According to an IDC research report, a job in IT operations has little future. To ensure job security, operations teams need to brush up on their programming skills.

IDC appears in its very first issue Worldwide xOps count and forecastResearch report providing an outlook on how IT operations and other job titles with the suffix “Ops” will develop between 2022 and 2027. The report paints a less positive picture of IT management-only roles. IDC predicts that IT operations job openings will decline by 8 percent annually through 2027. The same trend applies to system administrators.

Once per generation

According to IDC, the imminent collapse of IT operations is due to the move to the cloud and all the technological developments that it has made possible. Researcher Al Gillen speaks of a turning point that “occurs only once in a generation” and will be as decisive as the introduction of the World Wide Web into our working lives. In the cloud, there is a greater need for profiles with at least limited software development skills.

DevOps, a principle in which development and operation merge in one team, has been a trend in the IT world for years and will therefore become even more important in the coming years. Jobs such as “DataOps” and “MLOps” also show a high level of job security: IDC forecasts an annual growth of 20 percent in the number of vacancies for ML specialists. If you want to secure a future in the IT industry, you know where you can do an apprenticeship.
