Authorities of nearby cities mayon volcanoeast of the Philippine island of Luzon, will continue this Saturday from evacuation of more than 10 thousand people who have been leaving their homes since Friday due to the risk of an eruption, with a level three warning out of a maximum of five.

About 10,000 of the 20,000 people living within a radius of less than six kilometers from the volcano considered dangerous have been evacuated, and many refuse to leave their homes for fear that personal effects or their livestock will be stolen.

From what they said on the phone EFE eyewitnesses evacuation is slow and chaoticwith people entering and leaving the danger zone without much control in search of personal items they left at home.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr this Saturday called on the population of the most vulnerable areas to follow the recommendations of local authorities and leave the danger zone after the province of Albey, where the volcano is located, declared a state of emergency to release aid funds.

Marcos assured that the government has prepared 179,000 food packages for distribution in the coming days among the evacuees (10,000 so far, but maybe 20,000) and issued a response fund of 114 million pesos (1.88 million euros or 2.03 million dollars).

Philippine Institute of Volcanology (Phivolcs) maintain vigilance three (out of a maximum level of five) and indicates in his latest report that on Friday there was a volcanic earthquake, 59 rockfalls and the volcano emitted 417 tons of sulfur dioxide.

Frequent collapses of stones at very high temperatures made it possible in recent nights to see red bursts of lava at some points on the volcano, although Fievolks clarified that these are not lava flows.

The risk of a major eruption may last for several days or weeks due to the presence of magma in the crater.

Mayon, whose almost perfect conical shape one of the main tourist attractions from the province of Albay, whose capital Legazpi (200,000 inhabitants) is located just 12 kilometers from Mayon.

On the same island of Luzon, but to the west another volcano, Taal maintains higher than usual activitywith a danger level of one in five due to small earthquakes of volcanic origin that have been recorded in recent days.

The latest eruptions of Taal and Mayon in 2020 and 2018 respectively forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people and kept the inhabitants of Manila and Legazpi on alert for several days. (EFE)
