They also stated in their statement that preliminary reports indicated that the tank truck was involved on fire. There were no injuries.
Smoke billowed from debris from the collapsed portion of the northbound lane of I-95, the main north-south interstate on the East Coast. The video shows emergency vehicles and workers gathered near a massive, charred and collapsed section of the overpass.
Traffic in both directions of the eight-lane freeway was terminated due to concerns for the structural integrity of the remaining southern section.
According to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, President Joe Biden was briefed on the collapse and the government offered to bail out state and local governments.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the closure of I-95 would have a “material impact” on the area and the city of Philadelphia. Buttigieg revealed on Twitter that he is coordinating recovery and recovery efforts with the state authorities.
This section of the I-95 corridor is in densely populated northeast Philadelphia and connects the city to its northern suburbs such as Bucks County.
Philadelphia Fire Chief Derek Bowmer explained to the press that they were fighting a major fire from a car. “We were trying to put out the fire (…) we got reports that it could be a tanker truck with hazardous materials or something like that,” he said. (Reuters).
