Federal criminal charges against Donald Trump have done little to change how Americans view the former president, according to a new poll. Reuters/Ipsos completed on Monday, showing he retains a large lead in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.
The poll, which began on Friday, the day after Trump announced his impeachment, found that 62% of respondents, including 91% of Democrats and 35% of Republicans, thought it was true. Trump illegally keeps classified documents at his home in Florida.
However, 81% of Republicans said the charges against him were politically motivated.
The news did not appear to have affected Trump’s position in the race for the 2024 Republican nomination. Specific charges, including obstruction of justice, were released Friday afternoon.
About 43% of those who identify as Republicans said Trump was their preferred candidate, compared to 22% of those who chose Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
In early May, Trump led DeSantis 49% to 19%, but that was before DeSantis officially entered the race.
The rest of the Republican composition, including former Vice President Mike Pencewho announced his candidacy last week had support levels in the single digits.
Trump flew to Miami on Monday to face federal charges of illegally hiding U.S. national security documents and lying to officials who tried to obtain them.
The former president has pleaded not guilty and vowed to continue his campaign to return to the presidency. elections in November 2024.
He is the first former president or sitting president to face criminal charges, but legal experts say that won’t stop him from running or taking office even if convicted.
Republican officials, including many of the party’s contenders for the nomination, said the allegations against Trump smack of hypocrisy, citing classified documents found at the president’s home. Joe Biden in Delaware.
It is unclear whether Biden, a Democrat, will face legal action. Last week, Biden’s approval rating was 41%, close to the lowest level of his presidency. Trump’s approval rating at the time during his 2017-2021 presidency was 40%.
