Miami Court of Appeals agrees with Mexico in civil lawsuit against Garcia Luna

A Miami Court of AppealsUSA, sided with the Mexican government on civil action against Genaro Garcia Lunafiled by the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) that former Secretary of Public Security Felipe Calderon he wove an elaborate web to launder the stolen funds.

In September 2021, the Mexican government filed a lawsuit in the Eleventh District Court for Miami-Dade County accusing Garcia Luna of creating a “complex network” that allowed him tothe Avars “stole” about $700 million worth of funds.

The lawsuit involves Linda Pereira, the wife of a former federal official, as well as the Weinberg family of businessmen, led by Mauricio Samuel Weinberg Lopez. However, the Weinbergs and other members filed an appeal, stating that the case should not be heard in Miami.

Since November 2022, the case has been suspended pending a decision on the admissibility of the challenge.

This Wednesday and Miami Court of Appeals determined to reach an agreement with the Mexican government, so that after seven months the suspension of this case, so now it will continue and there will be a trial.

FGR Goes Against Garcia Luna’s Network: Wife, Sisters, Uncle, Alleged Creditors

Last May, FGR reported that it had received arrest warrants for a criminal network allegedly led by Genaro Garcia Luna for embezzlement, illicit resource dealing and organized crime.

The network allegedly involved government officials and private individuals, including Jonathan Alexis Weinberg Pinto and Mauricio Samuel Weinberg Lopez, alleged partners and confidants of former Security Minister Felipe Calderon’s six-year term.

According to the FGR, 60 people colluded with the then head of the Federal Secretariat of Public Security “to plunder the public resources of the decentralized administrative body for prevention and social rehabilitation (federal prisons)”.
