According to a study published by IDC Brasil, a market research firm, In Brazil, tablet sales decreased by 26% in the first quarter of 2023., compared to the previous period. In total, 529.2 thousand tablets were sold in the country, with the largest drop in the number of sales falling on the corporate sector – a decrease of 57%.



Of the total sales volume, 149.9 thousand phones accounted for the corporate segment and 379.3 thousand for retail, which grew by 4%. In other words, while the corporate segment fell by 57%, the retail segment increased by 4%. Nevertheless, a sharp drop in the corporate segment reduced total sales by 26% in the first quarter. The data shown is part of the Personal Computing Devices Tracker Q12023 study by IDC Brasil. In the rest of the world, we are also seeing similar movements with a drop in the number of sales in the segment of smartphones, laptops, tablets and PCs. Samsung also noted that smartphone sales are below average.

Sales of tablets for the corporate segment are falling

According to Renato Murari de Meireles, senior market analyst for mobile phones and commercial devices at IDC Brasil, the education and government sectors are largely responsible for the poor performance in the corporate sector and together account for 66% of the outstanding decline. “We understand that the government at the federal and regional levels is still in a period of restructuring and planning, and investments that will be directed to technologies are being evaluated. As a result, we saw a strong pullback in the first quarter of 2023, pulling the entire result for the period down.

According to him, Retail sales growth driven by changing user consumption profile. “Manufacturers are striving to meet consumer demand for tablets with more reliable performance and are supplying retailers with products with such performance.“, Meireles explained. Analyzing year by year, the market revenue also fell by 5%, amounting to a total of 705 million reais in the first quarter of 2023.



IDC Brasil foresees that the rest of 2023 will see this segment struggle to increase sales. Analyst firm predicts year of decline for Brazilian tablet market, both in B2C and B2B, with expected declines of 2% and 55%, respectively. Growth in the segment should only return in 2025, and until then, retailers should continue to contain sales declines as long as the average consumer is interested in tablets with top specs.
