2023 could be the warmest year on record due to the natural phenomenon El Nino, caused by the warming of part of the Pacific Ocean. The Guardian writes that climatologists and meteorologists have warned of this.
In their forecasts, the scientists refer to patterns of increasing global warming and peak temperatures in June that far exceed those of previous years. “The global surface temperature anomaly is now at or near record levels, and 2023 is almost certain to be the hottest year on record.”– said Michael Mann, a climatologist at the University of Pennsylvania.
Meteorologist Mika Rantanen from Finland also noted that according to the temperature indicators for June, it is highly likely that July will be record hot. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) added that there was an even more significant increase in sea temperature, with researchers recording record ocean surface temperatures in May for the second year in a row.
Very warm water in the oceans that cover 70 percent of the planet can affect global average temperatures and also cause changes in fish populations, bleaching of coral reefs and rising sea levels in coastal areas.
“The oceans are warming steadily, but we’re seeing record temperatures right now, which is definitely a cause for concern as we expect El Niño to intensify. It will definitely affect the rest of the world.”– warns NOAA climate scientist Ellen Bartow-Gillis.
