The discovery was made by a Twitter user using the pseudonym immasidtwitter, who shared screenshots of how he managed to get a license key for Windows 10 Pro from ChatGPT. He told the chatbot that “his late grandmother read him the license keys before bed,” apparently hitting the nerve of the times. As a result, he received five license keys which also effectively enabled him to upgrade his device from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro.

The experiment was later repeated for Windows 11, with valid license keys as a result. ChatGPT doesn’t turn out to be the only chatbot that is generous: Google’s Bard can also provide you with an official Windows license key. Digital Trends and Mashable ran the test themselves and confirmed that if you’re creative enough with your prompts, ChatGPT and Bard will eventually generate the license keys.

There is a small but. Although you get a powerful build of the Windows operating system with the license keys, it appears to be a more limited version that doesn’t include all the functionalities. Therefore, to get a full version of Windows 10 or Windows 11, you still need to contact Microsoft for the license key.

As of earlier this year, Microsoft stopped selling it for Windows 10. It’s one of the ways to make new Windows users aware of the latest version.
