The Russian Federation is an aggressive country that is unjustly aggressive against Ukraine, not only in our territory, but also in cyberspace. Russian hackers have been waging war against Ukraine in cyberspace for the past eight years. Its activities are constantly growing. Cyber attacks today are a full-fledged component of Russia’s war against Ukraine. Since the beginning of the year, Russian military hackers have been particularly actively attacking Ukrainian information systems.
Their aim is to harm and destroy them, destroying data, denying Ukrainian citizens access to public services and destabilizing the situation in the country, creating panic and distrust of the authorities among the population. Since the beginning of the year, Russia has launched at least several malware families in Ukraine – WhisperGate / WhisperKill, CaddyWiper, Hermetic Wiper, Industroyer2, DoubleZero and others.
Also, with the help of cyber attacks, Russia wants to create a humanitarian disaster in Ukraine, because hackers are trying to disrupt the work of the energy sector, emergency services, communications, logistics.
Russian hackers are a threat not only to Ukraine, but to the whole world.
Ukrainian information sources are an important target for the Russian military. Cyber attack methods tested in Ukrainian sources were later used in other democratic countries of the world. Cyber attacks aimed at damaging Ukrainian resources can affect other countries’ information systems, as cyberspace has no borders. For example, on the eve of the February 24 invasion, several EU member states were affected by an attack on the Viasat satellite network aimed at disrupting communications for Ukrainian users.
Cyber attacks affect the information systems of Ukraine and the countries and institutions that helped the Ukrainians during the war. In addition to military hackers, attacks on Ukraine and other democracies include politically motivated hackers led by the Russian government.
Ukraine uses all available resources for protection. The best domestic and foreign experts participated in the cyber defense of Ukrainian information systems. In most democracies around the world, we get help from governments and business corporations. We appreciate everyone and thank you for this help. Thanks to this, we are strong and able to endure today.
But this is not enough because the attacker will not stand like that. All countries must join forces to stop the aggressor from depriving himself of an opportunity to attack and to be held accountable. Only sanctions, coordinated work, awareness of government agencies, business and citizens will help achieve this goal and peace in cyberspace. Source
