Thierry Breton, the European Union’s internal market commissioner, said Twitter is committed to complying with the EU’s Digital Services Act, which will come into effect in August. DSA has two main goals: creating a level playing field for businesses and creating a safer digital space.

Twitter’s decision to cooperate with the EU and comply with the DSA comes months after Breton told Musk that Twitter would be governed by EU rules. The comment came after Musk took over Twitter, and the company began receiving backlash for some of Musk’s comments on how the platform should work.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Breton made the announcements about Twitter’s intent to abide by the rules after an EU team visited the company’s headquarters this week. The team ran stress tests to check how well the platform complies with the new law.

Speaking to a reporter, Breton said he didn’t have to believe Twitter’s word that it would follow the law. Instead, he said the law would be enforced and that Twitter would suffer the consequences if it didn’t comply.

The EU will not publish the results of the stress tests, but Twitter now knows where changes need to be made to comply with the new law. Twitter is the first platform to pass the DSA stress test, but the EU will also want to see how other companies respond, Breton tweeted.

Twitter’s new CEO, Linda Jaccarino, is considered more stable to run the company compared to Elon Musk. She said the EU is very important to Twitter and that the company is focused on maintaining its partnership with the bloc.
