British fighter jets intercept 21 Russian aircraft in NATO airspace

United Kingdom Air Force (RAF) fighters intercepted 21 Russian aircraft near NATO airspace over the past 21 days, the British Ministry of Defense said on Sunday.

The portfolio statement states that the RAF Typhoon model combat fighters, which provide rapid response as part of the NATO Baltic Air Surveillance Mission in Estonia “They were sent to respond to Russian aircraft 21 times.”

British fighters carried has been working at the Amari base (Estonia) since March last year, as part of that country’s contribution to the North Atlantic Alliance.

Operation in the Baltic airspace currently operated by the RAF, based in Estonia along with the Portuguese and Romanian air forces based in Lithuania.

The last three weeks have been “particularly busy and have resulted in an RAF intercept 21 Russian aircraft in 21 days”, reveals a memo from the Ministry of Defense, which reminds that British fighters are watching Russian aircraft when they are not communicating with aviation services.

“These interceptions are a stark reminder of the importance of collective defense and deterrence provided by NATO”. This is stated in a statement by British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.

The minister noted that the RAF had acted with its allies “during the last three weeks to ensure that both member states and allied countries They are protected.”

This NATO mission was established in 2014. at the Amari base (Estonia) and at the Siauliai base (Lithuania) after the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia.
