NASA’s Perseverance rover has sent back a photo of a large rock with a hole in the middle, currently dubbed the “Martian donut.” Representatives of the SETI Institute, which is engaged in extraterrestrial intelligence research, said that this stone could be part of a large meteorite that fell on the planet.

Perseverance first detected the potential meteorite a few weeks after it landed on the planet in February 2021. Another rover, Curiosity, has also discovered several meteorites on Mars since landing in August 2012. In January 2014, NASA’s Opportunity rover found a white-outside, red-inside rock, prompting NASA to compare it to a jelly donut.

Perseverance is exploring a 45km-wide crater on Mars called Jezero that contained a large lake and river delta billions of years ago. The rover looks for signs of long-existing life and collects dozens of soil samples for future return to Earth.

It is powered by a small Ingenuity helicopter designed for 5 flights. But to date, Ingenuity has made 51 flights to Mars, totaling 11.7 km.
