Internal Microsoft documents reveal that the company has plans to make Windows a full operating system in the cloud.

The technology giant Microsoft plans to house its Windows operating system entirely in the cloud. That emerges from a recent internal presentation.

The presentation was released as part of an FTC investigation into Microsoft’s acquisition of game studio Blizzard Entertainment. According to the Federal Trade Commission, Blizzard’s merger with Microsoft’s Xbox and related services would give the American company an unfair competitive advantage.

The documentation indicates that Microsoft wants to build this future version of Windows on top of the Windows 365 cloud infrastructure. The move is seen as a long-term opportunity for the Modern Life Experiences team within the company. The focus is on AI and a comprehensive user experience.

Windows 365 may be commercially usable, Microsoft has already integrated part of it into Windows 11. A future update will be called Boot. This gives Windows 11 devices the ability to sign in to Windows through a cloud environment rather than a local version.

Microsoft recently released a new preview of Windows 11 that pays more attention to passkeys. Earlier this month it also appeared that Moment 3 would be installed automatically on Windows 11. This update was supposed to be optional and is now causing some issues.
