The American space agency NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter has restored communication with the Perseverance rover on the Red Planet after two months of silence.

This was reported by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), as reported by Ukrinform.

“The Ingenuity helicopter’s 52nd flight is now successfully recorded in the mission’s official logbook. The flight took place on April 26, but mission controllers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California lost contact with the helicopter during landing,” he said.

The team running Ingenuity expected a communication interruption as there was a hill between the helicopter’s landing site and the Perseverance rover blocking communication between them.

“Contact was re-established on June 28 when Perseverance climbed the hill and was able to see Ingenuity again,” JPL added.

It was stated that the purpose of the 52nd flight, which is 363 meters long and 139 seconds long, is to reposition the helicopter and take images of the Martian surface for the rover science team.

Ingenuity is expected to take to the skies again on Mars in the next few weeks.

As Ukrinform reported, the Ingenuity helicopter was delivered to the Red Planet on February 18, 2022, along with NASA’s Perseverance rover, after nearly 7 months of flight. Ingenuity made its maiden flight on 19 April the same year. The $85 million helicopter became the first plane to be launched from another planet.
