Google called on a well-known figure in national politics to “broker” a debate involving tech companies and bill 2630/2020better known as Fake News PL.

According to the newspaper Folha de Sao Pauloformer president’s name Michel Temer (MDB)who led the country from 2016 to 2018. He himself confirmed to the report that he worked for about three weeks to help negotiate regulation of social media platforms, representing companies.

Temer’s role is to be an intermediary with great reach and influence among parliamentarians. At meetings in the National Congress, he represents Google’s views on PL 2630 and the company’s concerns, in particular on the issue of expanding Big Tech’s responsibility for content broadcast on services such as YouTube.

So far, according to the politician, no conversations with Federal Supreme Court (STF)which will also play an important role in changing the current articles of the Marco Civil da Internet.

Discussion of the Fake News LP is currently suspended. Speaker – Deputy Orlando Silva (PC do B-SP), who asked to remove the issue from the agenda of the Chamber. The proposal does not have a specific voting date.

Like messenger Telegram, Google was even notified by the Department of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) after posting messages contradicting PL on the search engine’s home page, in addition to directly reaching out to YouTubers to clarify the brand’s point of view.

What Google Says

In a note sent to the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper, Google did not confirm Temer’s signature on the name, but explained that it was part of his actions in cases like this.

“Like other companies and organizations, we are hiring specialized agencies and consultants to help mediate our government dialogue efforts so that we can get our input across to politicians and parliamentarians, especially on important and technical issues such as developing a new legislation.”the statement says.

Prior to taking the top management position, Associate Temer worked in vice president and was a deputy for a little over 20 years, in addition to Secretary of Public Security in Sao Paulo.
